Was Edward Scissorhands Secretly a Romantic Masterpiece?
With the 30th Anniversary of what is arguably Tim Burton's best film, Edward Scissorhands, coming up next week, we thought this would be the perfect time to look back on it & see how it holds up today!
As with all of Burton’s best works, Edward Scissorhands is a movie that can be incredibly difficult to explain to anyone who hasn’t already seen it. Not only does it not conform to a single genre (is it a comedy? is it a romance? is it a quirky drama?), it also presents an aesthetic of hyper-theatric realism that simultaneously shows the world as a large stage play while also presenting a nostalgic view of the world that many baby boomers remember growing up in. Pairing the bright pastel colors of 1970’s suburbia with the dark, ominous tones that influenced every 90’s goth kid, this movie gives the audience a Christmas themed Frankenstein from the perspective of The Monster.
If all that isn’t enough to make you at least curious enough to watch this movie…well…you must have been severely deprived as a child. Today we look back on what may be our favorite masterclass in gothic romance & see how it has influenced both cinema & pop culture over the past 30 years in today’s edition of Dallas Geek!
