Is V for Vendetta The Perfect Anarchist Fantasy?

Warning: in case you missed last Wednesday’s show, the image you are about to see may be much stranger than you were expecting. If you want an explanation for this, please go watch our Ultimate Trivia Battle!

So far, 2020 has given us some…we’ll say less than stellar experiences that we have all tried to black out. We started the year with World War 3 trending across social media, then Australia was on fire, then Locusts literally swarmed across Africa like a biblical plague, followed up by a world-wide pandemic, global lockdown orders, political turmoil, & now protests against police brutality starting in the US & spreading around the world. Needless to say, this year has been “eventful”. However, it is that last part of the list that we want to take a look at today.

You see, if there is one thing that Hollywood loves to make movies about more than superheroes, it’s stories of the people rising up against a tyrannical government. For a long time, there was always a cynical part of us that saw those movies as cheap grab at the angst we all felt for being overly complacent with a mostly mediocre life (i.e. Fight Club). However, recent events have given a whole new perspective to Hollywood’s anarchy fetish. So, we thought it would be a good idea to take a look at the quintessential anarchist movie in modern cinema, V for Vendetta, & see if it really holds up today. Should people look at it as inspiration for their fight against “the man” or is it just another example of escapist fantasy that did a mediocre job at adapting an extraordinarily complex graphic novel. Find out on today’s edition of Does It Still Hold Up!
