Hot Labor Summer: Can Unions Save the Entertainment Industry?
For those of you not chronically obsessed with entertainment news, you may or may not know that we are now 109 days into the WGA strike & 48 days into the SAG-AFTRA strike. Both unions are currently fighting to improve the pay & labor conditions for their members, as both have been continually diminished as streaming services have increased their dominance over how new shows & movies are made & distributed. With support from all other Hollywood unions, along with the majority of the American people, the entertainment industry has found itself at a critical tipping point that may determine the future of not only streaming, but labor relations across the US.
As we speak, a growing number of unions across multiple industries are standing up against corporate greed, with many more non-union workers voting to unionize & do the same. Now, all eyes are on the major studios in Hollywood & the AMPTP to see how far they are willing to damage their own profits & reputations in an attempt avoid improving labor relations.
With so many new strike updates happening each week, we decided that it was time for us to break down what you need to know to understand why this is happening & how to read between the lines of the AMPTP propaganda attempting to discredit the unions in the court of public opinion. Join us on today's edition of Dallas Geek as we dive into the first of what is sure to be a long & fascinating series covering the strikes!
