Is Brian Mathis the Fan Favorite Part of The Ancient Magus Bride?
Some actors are happy to get one or two roles that people can recognize them from, but if they ever stumble into a cult classic role, that is considered an incredible achievement. Brian Mathis was one of those lucky actors with Vice Admiral Garp on One Piece. Most of the time, that would be enough to coast on, but not this guy. In 2017, he found himself voicing Elias, the lead The Ancient Magus’ Bride (the new cult favorite for every goth desperate for something to latch onto once they finished Death Note & Black Butler).
If this is the first time you are hearing about The Ancient Magus’ Bride, it is a gothic romance centered around a desperate high school girl, named Chise, who sells herself at an auction to be taken in as the apprentice of a great magus/mage, hoping to find her place in life. Along the way, she falls for her new seven-foot-tall magus with an animal skull for a head & all the dangers that come with him. If all that sounds like the results of one crazy round of mad libs, then this must be your first time on this end of the anime pool. Welcome to the weird side of anime dear baby weeb. This is your home now!
In all seriousness, it really is a fantastic show & we cannot wait for a new season to be greenlit for production. Brian’s deep baritone adds so much fun & comfort to the roles that he takes on. For someone who looks like he could be Michael Iron’s double in Total Recall, he brings so much joy to the room when he gets talking.
