Chuck Huber, aka Android 17, at Waxacon
Anyone who has been even peripherally aware of anime has probably heard of Dragon Ball Z or one of its MANY iterations that exist today. It is an anime that has become so mainstream in America that it finally got a balloon in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade this year! So, with that level of popularity, you can understand the excitement we felt when we had the opportunity to interview one of the voice actors who has been with the franchise since the original series first aired back in late 80’s.
Chuck Huber, a man whos work is known to anime fans world wide, has been working on the English dubs for some of the most renowned anime series today. Starting with a short stint on the original Dragon Ball series as Master Shen, Chuck soon found his first real taste of notoriety as the demon Hiei in Yu Yu Hakusho. During this time, Chuck continued to pull double duty with Funimation on the sequel series to Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, lending his voice to Garlic Jr., Android 17, & Kibito. However, all of that only brings us up to the mid 90’s! Since then, he has been done voice work for One Piece, Blue Gender, Fullmetal Alchemist, Soul Eater, Tokyo Ghoul, Assassination Classroom, Dragon Ball Super, & so many more!
With all of that under his belt, it would be easy to make certain assumptions about what he would be like in person. However, what we experienced was a guy who had a great sense of humor & was incredibly humble about what he does for a living. The entire time we spoke to him, before & after the interview, Chuck continued to tell stories about his experiences in the industry, joke around, & talk about whatever came to mind in the moment. He was an absolutely wonderful guest & we cannot recommend enough that each one of you should go check his work immediately! And if you ever have a chance to meet him at a convention, take a second & do so. You definitely won’t regret it!
