With the rise in popularity of comic conventions, we have seen more attention be given to Cosplay & cosplayers. This thing that was once seen as a quirky hobby of the truly devout fans has shifted into a much broader spectrum that is now seen as both an art form &, for a select few, a genuine profession. While none of this would be possible without the ever increasing skill of the cosplayers, themselves, in the art of costume making & accurate portrayals of the characters they embody, the other half of the equation has come from the photographers. In the very beginning of cosplay, quality photographers at conventions were few & far between. What images you could find of cosplayers came from other convention attendees who were there taking snapshots for fun. Today, you can find a mass of amateur & professional photographers attending these conventions, working with cosplayers all around the convention hall.
One of these exceptional photographers is Brian Holm, aka Photo Persuasion. Brian has been doing cosplay photography for the better part of a decade &, when you see his images, it shows. His grasp of lighting, both in studio & on location, has created a wonderful array of images that have appeared in many cosplayers' portfolios. As he explained during our interview, he has a passion for showing the best moments of each cosplayer he works with. More importantly, he enjoys bringing out the fun & help even the most timid cosplayer get excited all over again about the character whose costume they have chosen to show off. While some cosplay photographers specialize in composite imagery & graphic design to create a surreal final image that is straight out of a comic book, Brian prefers to stay more grounded, creating most of the dramatic effects through creative lighting & exciting poses. The resulting images provide a high contrast look at his subjects that really make the colors pop off the screen.
With the help of his fiancé, he continues to create fantastic images that beg to be seen. If you are interested in checking out any of Brian's work or would are a cosplayer who would like to work with him, be sure to check out his information below!
